Specifying LED sign lighting
Connect the graphic, viewing position and installation in one brief.
Sign lighting is a distinct specification task. Begin with what must be read, where it will be seen and how the sign is constructed. Establish these requirements before selecting a light source or comparing quotations.
Viewing conditions
Provide sign dimensions, lettering, colours and material samples. Describe viewing distances and angles, nearby lighting and the day or night conditions to assess. Identify whether the sign is indoors or exposed to weather.
Ask the project team to define acceptance criteria for legibility and appearance. Lighting a sign does not by itself establish an increase in visits or sales.
Lighting format
Distinguish light directed onto the surface from light inside or behind the graphic. Supply the construction drawing so lighting and sign suppliers review the same assembly. Confirm which sources, optical parts, power supply, controls and mounting components are included.
Product information should describe that assembly rather than a bare component. The LED specification basics explain this distinction.
Sample review
Review a representative sample using the specified graphic and materials. Check letters, edges and background, visible bright spots and consistency across the sign. Record the viewing conditions and approved configuration.
Compare alternatives under the same conditions. Request colour and output information, but also review the actual sign at the intended viewing position.
Installation and maintenance
Identify responsibility for power supply, environmental protection, mounting, access and project approvals. Obtain installation and maintenance documents for the selected system; do not apply an unrelated luminaire's instructions.
This is a specification guide, rather than confirmation of a BILLLED sign-lighting range. See the current workplace products and confirm any special supply scope with the relevant supplier.
