LED lighting basics for specification

Start with the complete luminaire and the task it must perform.

An LED label identifies a light-source technology. A purchasing decision still needs a defined product, its intended location and a record of the offered configuration. Compare those details before choosing a replacement light source or a complete luminaire.

The complete product

Identify whether the offer is a replaceable lamp, an LED module or a finished luminaire. Ask which light source, driver, optical parts and controls are included. A component description alone does not establish the performance or service arrangements of the finished product.

For a replacement, obtain the existing fitting information and ask the supplier to confirm the proposed match. For a new luminaire, record the intended task and installation constraints.

Output and power

Compare declared light output and input power for the same configuration. Avoid choosing from wattage or a comparison with an unspecified traditional bulb alone. Request distribution information needed for the room, and review a sample at the working position.

Where savings form part of a project, document the reference installation using the lighting energy and controls guide.

Colour information

Record the offered colour temperature, colour-rendering data and adjustable settings. Review samples alongside room finishes, printed material and existing light. Warm, daylight or natural descriptions do not replace configuration data.

If light colour can change, confirm the adjustment method and which settings the documents cover. Keep health-related claims separate from descriptions of the light.

Configuration documents

Ask for the model reference, drawings, photometric information, control description and applicable market documentation. Confirm maintenance instructions, replaceable parts and the service contact. A claimed lifetime or saving should identify its conditions and supporting evidence.

Keep the approved sample and document revision together for repeat orders. Explore current workplace platforms or discuss a configuration.
