Office lighting layout and specification

Connect work areas, luminaire formats and project evidence in one documented plan.

An office lighting plan is more than a list of luminaires. It should describe the tasks, furniture and room conditions, then identify how general, task and accent lighting will work together.

Map functions and tasks

Record desk groups, private offices, meeting rooms and shared areas. Note screen positions, document work, circulation, windows and room finishes. Identify flexible layouts and any spaces that change function during the day.

Have the project team define the relevant requirements for the location and work. Do not copy a universal illuminance, spacing or colour-rendering threshold from an article without checking its applicable context.

Define lighting roles

Separate general room lighting from local task lighting and decorative emphasis. Compare ceiling or suspended luminaires, desk-mounted products and freestanding arrangements against those roles. Keep furniture clearances and installation responsibility visible in the plan.

See pendant and linear selection, office floor lamps and desk lamps for format-specific checks.

Review distribution and controls

Request configuration-specific distribution, output and colour information. Review source visibility, screen reflections and the proposed direct or indirect arrangement. Use a project lighting calculation where the designer requires it, together with a representative sample review.

Describe manual operation, sensing, zones and any integration separately. Agree commissioning and user override rather than assuming every product provides the same automatic behaviour.

Project documents and handover

Keep layout drawings, product schedules, calculation assumptions and document revisions together. Assign installation, commissioning, maintenance and support responsibilities. Confirm applicability of reports and standards with the responsible project team.

Record approved settings and later layout changes. For energy-related controls, use the building-controls guide. Submit the project brief to discuss current product configurations.
